Born in the heart of the wine region of Penedes in Spain and with more than 30 years of experience in the restaurant business, Chef Olivella brings to the Bay Area his food and wine knowledge to share with all of his customers. He started work as a youngster in his home town of Vilafranca del Penedes at L’Era which was the first international restaurant to open, then moved to Chicago were under his uncle tutelage was exposed to a traditional yet classy restaurant La Paella. It was in Chicago where Daniel had his first taste of the corporate restaurant world opening as a trainee at Café Babareeba then moving to Shaw’s Crab house, both owned by Lettuce entertain you. From there he moved to Palm Springs to work for Sydney Chaplin’s at Chaplin’s Bistro. That followed with a stint of 1 year at San Francisco renowned Zuni café and a 3-year tenure at Barcelona’s Servicio Wilson, which became the most popular place during the 92 Olympic games. Another stop of 1 year at Zuni café until he landed the chef position at Thirstybear, 3 years there until he finally made his dream come true by opening B44 Catalan Bistro.

Currently he is the chef and managing partner of B44 Catalan Bistro and the newly 2009 opened Barlata tapas bar in Oakland, CA. He is currently working in his second Barlata tapas bar this time in Austin, TX due to open in 2013. He currently travels back and forth from the Bay Area to Austin,TX. where his family resides: wife Vanessa Jerez and daughters Talize and Zyena, he is expecting the arrival of his new son Gael.
